A Brief History!

Third Generation Upholsterers

Our family history as upholsterers goes back a little further than 1965 to my great grandfather Frank Ellis Boothe. Frank started upholstering in 1942, opening his own shop in downtown, Newport News, working side by side, with a local mattress maker. Frank eventually moved his family and business to Poquoson where he continued working as an upholsterer for his remaining years.

Robert Glenn Boothe Sr. grew up in his fathers shop tearing down furniture. In 1965 Robert and Mary Boothe founded Boothe’s Son Upholstering Co. To date they have upholstered over 10,000 pieces of furniture for customers ranging from Northern Virginia to North Carolina and beyond.

Growing up in the business!

Robert & Mary Boothe & JB

In 2008, when Robert and Mary reached retirement age, Jeremiah joined the family business to take over.

Jeremiah plunged feet first into learning upholstery, and mastered it in only a few years. Jeremiah accredits his fast learning to growing up in a family of upholsterers. He says, “It was always a very hands-on and DIY environment to live in which was great for skill building. It was always exciting having strange new pieces of furniture passing through the shop.”

The trio engaged in a variety of upholstery projects. Often working together with some of the area’s finest tradesmen and interior designers.

In 2013 Jeremiah took over and ran the business until the start 2023 to which he handed the reins to his brother Daniel.

Our master upholsterer

Daniel Hollingshead

In 2006, Daniel took a calculated risk and moved to Jacksonville Florida. This is where he had his first taste of upholstery working part time for his great uncle, Sam Boothe. At the time, Sam’s business model was furniture repair and restaurant upholstery. Unfortunately, with the housing market crash, Sam’s business slowed to a crawl. To pay the bills Daniel found work as a union carpenter. He later went back to college and earned a college degree. Over the years he still helped his uncle, Sam, when he needed an extra hand.

Fast forward to 2015 and by chance Daniel started a job at Upholstery by Yuri. While there he developed and then mastered his upholstery skills. At the end of 2018 Yuri had to close his second shop. He was going through a rough battle with an aggressive cancer and passed away late 2019.

With the closing of Yuri’s shop, Daniel started building his business in the beginning of 2019. With much effort he was able to open his business at the start of 2020. Unfortunately, faced with the hardships of the pandemic Daniel decided to move north. There he joined Jeremiah’s upholstery business, Boothe’s Son Upholstering Co., LLC.
